What Is the Buzz About Iconicity? How Iconicity in Caregiver Speech Supports Children's Word Learning

چکیده

Abstract One cue that may facilitate children's word learning is iconicity, or the correspondence between a word's form and meaning. Some have even proposed iconicity in early lexicon serve to help children learn how words, supporting acquisition of noniconic, arbitrary , word–referent associations. However, this proposal remains untested. Here, we investigate caregivers’ speech young during naturalistic free‐play session with novel stimuli ask whether facilitates noniconic names those stimuli. Thirty‐four 1.5‐2‐year‐olds (19 girls; half monolingual English learners bilingual English‐Spanish learners) participated task their caregivers followed by test word‐referent retention. We found use particularly utterances which they named stimuli, was associated likelihood learned name. This result held when controlling for other factors learning, such as concreteness frequency words caregiver speech. Together, results demonstrate not only can identify referent (as previous research) but also support ability retain mappings.

Iconicity in Word Learning: What Can We Learn from Cross-Situational Learning Experiments?

Iconicity, i.e. resemblance between form and meaning, is a widespread feature of natural language vocabulary (Perniss, Thompson, & Vigliocco, 2010), and has been shown to facilitate vocabulary acquisition (Imai, Kita, Nagumo, & Okada). But what kind of advantage does iconicity actually give? Here we use cross-situational learning (Yu & Smith, 2007), to address the question for sound-shape iconi...

Iconicity vs. Systematicity in Artificial Language Learning

A foundational assumption in linguistics has been that words and their meanings are arbitrarily related; however, this position has been challenged recently. Experiments have shown that both systematic (where similar objects have similar labels) and iconic (words ‘resemble’ the objects they label) associations between words and objects facilitate learning. However, these two literatures remain ...

Phonological iconicity

The arbitrariness of the linguistic sign is a fundamental assumption in modern linguistic theory. In recent years, however, a growing amount of research has investigated the nature of non-arbitrary relations between linguistic sounds and semantics. This review aims at illustrating the amount of findings obtained so far and to organize and evaluate different lines of research dedicated to the is...

Iconicity as structure mapping.

Linguistic and psycholinguistic evidence is presented to support the use of structure-mapping theory as a framework for understanding effects of iconicity on sign language grammar and processing. The existence of structured mappings between phonological form and semantic mental representations has been shown to explain the nature of metaphor and pronominal anaphora in sign languages. With respe...

Iconicity in the speech of children and adults.

Iconicity - the correspondence between form and meaning - may help young children learn to use new words. Early-learned words are higher in iconicity than later learned words. However, it remains unclear what role iconicity may play in actual language use. Here, we ask whether iconicity relates not just to the age at which words are acquired, but also to how frequently children and adults use t...
